Stay Off The Ice

The Ottawa Fire Services – Ice Rescue Teams safely rescued a dog and a resident, on Saturday February 28, 2026, after both fell through the ice on the Rideau River.

This incident serves as an important reminder to residents: never venture onto the ice to attempt a rescue yourself. Your best chance of survival, and your pet’s, is to remain on shore and immediately call 9-1-1 for the Ottawa Fire Services – Ice Rescue Teams for help.

At approximately 13:18, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call reporting that a dog had fallen through the ice near the intersection of Strandherd Drive and Prince of Wales Drive. The caller advised they could still see the dog, which was partially submerged and clinging to an ice shelf with its front paws.

Upon arrival, Firefighters confirmed visual contact with the dog. Crews also identified a bystander who had attempted to rescue the animal and had subsequently fallen through the ice.

The Ice Rescue Team quickly established a tethered rescue system and deployed a fortunate rescue sled onto the ice. The bystander was rescued first, followed by the dog.

Both were safely brought back to shore at 13:29, just four minutes after crews arrived on scene. The bystander and the dog were assessed by the Ottawa Paramedic Service.

We strongly urge residents to stay off waterways during fluctuating temperatures, as ice conditions can change rapidly and without warning.
