Ottawa Police expand Safe Trade Program with new locations

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is pleased to announce the addition of new Safe Trade parking spots at its Greenbank and Leitrim police stations.

First launched in September 2023 at three OPS locations, Safe Trade Zones are designed to enhance personal safety when completing trades arranged through online marketplaces, classified websites, or other personal sales.

New Safe Trade locations:

  • 245 Greenbank Road, Nepean (Greenbank Police Station)

  • 4561 Bank Street, Gloucester (Leitrim Police Station)

Existing Safe Trade locations:

  • 466 Metcalfe Street (visitors' parking lot behind 474 Elgin Street)

  • 211 Huntmar Drive (Kanata Police Station)

  • 3343 St-Joseph Boulevard (Orléans Police Station)

About Safe Trade

The goal of Safe Trade Zones is to move in-person transactions away from isolated parking lots or private residences and into safer, public spaces.

Safe Trade parking spots are clearly marked with signage and a distinctive blue logo, making it easy to identify where to conduct your exchange.

Safety first

The OPS reminds residents to prioritize their personal safety when arranging to meet with strangers for a trade. Here are some important safety tips:

  • Avoid inviting strangers to your home to complete a transaction.

  • Bring a friend and choose a well-lit public place with video surveillance—preferably a Safe Trade Zone.

  • Meet during daylight hours. Last-minute changes to the meeting location should be treated as a red flag.

  • Walk away from the exchange if you're asked to go to a second, unfamiliar location.

  • Avoid meeting in vacant parking lots or secluded areas.

Please note

While the Greenbank and Leitrim stations are closed to the public, their Safe Trade Zones remain under video surveillance. However, like all OPS Safe Trade locations, they are not monitored 24/7.

Persons using the premises for Safe Trade Zones are advised that the Ottawa Police Service does not assume any responsibility for any transactions or mediate the use of its premises for this purpose.
