Celebrating Black History Month at the Library

February is Black History Month! Across Canada and in other countries around the world, we celebrate the contributions, cultures and stories of the Black community. This year at the Library, we invite you to explore and reflect on how Black communities have resisted oppression in the past and today through a variety of activities (talks, poetry workshops, historical discussions & more): 

  • 💬 Stop by any OPL branch to participate in activities planned specifically for Black History Month or look at the displays filled with books on Black culture and history!   

  • 📢 OPL has a special YouTube playlist for Black History Month! It includes a variety of author discussions as well as an insightful youth discussion panel

  • 📚 Take advantage of this time to discover new literary treasures by browsing these staff-recommended book lists:

📖 Canada Reads 2023

Canada Reads - the popular nationwide Battle of the Books competition, seeking to find the one book every Canadian should read, is back! Five books were shortlisted, and between March 27-30, 2023, readers will be able to vote for their favourite. If you want to join in and read this year’s books, OPL has many copies available to borrow in multiple formats! You can find out more about the books, the authors, and how to participate on the CBC Canada Reads website. Happy reading!


🏥 Advanced Care Planning Workshops

Compassionate Ottawa presents facilitated group discussions about values, wishes and beliefs for personal health care. You will learn more about the Advance Care Planning process, including the rules in Ontario, and most importantly on how to start difficult conversations with your loved ones.
